After installation....

Thank you for installing a Changing Places toilet! Now that the installation is complete, here are some things to consider to ensure your Changing Places toilet continues to be an asset to you and your customers:
 

Registration

If you haven’t already done so, please register your Changing Places toilet with the Consortium so we can add it to the Changing Places map. The easiest way to do this is online, or contact us if you need an offline registration form. Don’t forget to attach some photos of the facility for us to include on our site.
 
Don’t forget to update us if any details change, eg opening hours or contact details, so we can update your entry on our site.
 

Signage

Changing Places toilets must be properly signposted.
  • The signage files contacting the Changing Places logo will be sent to you when you register your toilet with us, or contact us and we can send you a copy
  • Signs should be located on the entrance to the toilet, inside the venue, and on any appropriate street signage. It’s recommended that a sign is placed at the entrance to the venue, and at regular intervals along the route to the facility. Consider whether this should be overhead so that it remains visible when the venue is full of visitors.
  • The Changing Places symbol should be displayed on the toilet door. You may want to add the words “Changing Places toilet”, as the symbol is not always recognised by everyone
  • You should also consider whether additional information such as what a Changing Places toilet is and how to get access, should be provided
  • Guidance should be provided within the Changing Places toilets, stating the manufacturer’s maximum weight limit for the hoist and bench, along with any necessary instructions for using the equipment

Online information & promotion

Hold a launch event to celebrate and promote your new Changing Places toilet. Invite local campaigners and press - we can help you with this.
 
Also promote your Changing Places toilet via social media. Engage with us on Twitter (@CP_Consortium), we’re happy to help you get the word out!
 
Consider displaying information about the Changing Place toilet on your website:
  • What the Changing Places toilet is
  • That the user must bring their own sling
  • Exact location of the Changing Places toilet and any access arrangements, eg if the toilet is locked on arrival or access must be granted by a staff member
  • Opening times
  • Contact details for any problems

Staff Training

You must ensure that all your staff are fully trained in what the Changing Places toilet is and how it differs from a standard accessible WC. It’s also vital that all staff know its location within your venue and any access arrangements, so they can direct visitors to it.

Cleanliness & maintenance

It’s essential that your Changing Places facility is regularly cleaned and maintained, so ensure that you sign up for the necessary servicing and maintenance agreements with your equipment provider/installer. Regular maintenance should also include (as a minimum):
  • Keeping the access route clear
  • Keeping signage visible
  • Maintaining door locks & handles/automatic opening doors
  • Emptying waste bins (and checking that bins don’t cause an obstruction)
  • Hoist motor & changing bench returned to charging position / batteries charged
  • All surfaces thoroughly cleaned using appropriate cleaning products
  • Alarm cord is at full length, and alarm system is tested regularly
  • Replenishing toilet paper / wide paper roll / soap
Please notify us immediately if there are any maintenance problems that may temporarily take your Changing Places toilet out of action, so we can let our users know.
 

Feedback

There are sites and apps that allow users to review venues with Changing Places toilets. Good feedback will mean good publicity for your venue, and any negative reviews will flag up problems and help you to resolve them quickly, so we’d recommend engaging with these sites:
