Life just got better for people with disabilities in Gateshead July 2008

1 July 08

Things have just got better for people with disabilities in Gateshead and for those who would like to visit the area.

The MetroCentre is one of the largest shopping centres in the UK and it now proudly boasts a Changing Places toilet – with a hoist, changing bench and plenty of space. This is great news for people with disabilities and their families who want to access normal everyday activities that other people take for granted.

Before the provision of Changing Places toilets, many people with severe and profound learning disabilities had to restrict the length of their visits to the MetroCentre or were unable to go at all, because the standard accessible toilets were unsuitable. These people can now visit the centre, knowing that their needs will be catered for.

The Tyneside Changing Places development group support the national Changing Places campaign by aiming to increase the number of Changing Places toilets in all major public places in the area. The group have worked with the MetroCentre, helping with consultation and providing advice.
