PAMIS is delighted to celebrate the installation of a new Changing Places Toilet (CPT) at one of the UK’s most iconic and historically significant sites, St Paul’s Cathedral in London. This milestone represents a major advancement in accessible tourism, ensuring that visitors with complex disabilities, as well as their families and carers, can enjoy this world‑renowned landmark with dignity, comfort, and confidence.
Finding an appropriate location for a CPT within such an architecturally complex and historically protected site was not without its challenges. The age and structure of the Cathedral, combined with the strict requirements that accompany a Grade I listed building, meant that identifying a suitable, compliant, and sensitive space required significant expertise. However, where there’s a will, there’s a way. Through specialist guidance, careful planning, and a commitment to preserving the integrity of the building, the project team succeeded in creating a fully functional CPT that both meets modern accessibility standards and respects the Cathedral’s heritage - even incorporating original stonework that highlights the building’s remarkable history.
As a site that welcomes millions of visitors from across the globe each year, the addition of a fully equipped CPT ensures that St Paul’s is accessible to even more people. This investment not only meets crucial accessibility needs but also reinforces the Cathedral’s long‑held commitment to inclusivity, expressed in its vision:
“Inspiring faith. Welcoming everyone. A Cathedral for London and the world.”
By installing a CPT, St Paul’s Cathedral demonstrates how deeply this vision is embedded in its approach to visitor experience. Heritage venues and major tourist destinations play a pivotal role in ensuring cultural spaces are open to all — something this installation strongly supports.
PAMIS CEO and Chair of the UK Changing Places Consortium, Jenny Miller, welcomed the news:
“As Chair of the UK Changing Places Toilet Consortium, PAMIS is delighted to welcome the installation of a Changing Places toilet at St Paul’s Cathedral. We are thrilled that such an iconic and historic landmark has taken this vital step towards greater accessibility and inclusion. Heritage venues and major tourist destinations have a powerful role to play in ensuring that people with complex disabilities — and those who care for them — can participate fully in cultural life.
The installation of a Changing Places toilet at St Paul’s Cathedral sends a strong message about the importance of inclusive tourism, showing how even the most historic sites can lead the way in removing barriers. This investment means that thousands more visitors will now be able to experience this remarkable place with dignity, comfort, and confidence.”
Rebecca Thompson, Director of Property, St Paul’s Cathedral said:
