Changing Places Toilets Layout 

Room Dimensions 

  • 12m2 (3x4)
  • 2.4m minimum ceiling height
  • Door opens out, at least 1000mm wide clearance with a contrasting frame, handle and lock.
  • Distances of 1000mm (minimum) from the centre of the WC pan to any wall or fixed obstruction on both sides
  • Manoeuvring/Turning space (2000 x1800mm minimum)
  • Centre of washbasin from wall (1000mm)
  • Equipment in Example Plan:

    1. Ceiling track hoist system showing full room coverage

    2. Adult-sized, height-adjustable, changing bench (minimum 1800mm x 800mm with a safe working load of at least 200kg)

    3. Peninsular toilet with no fixed obstructions on either side (close coupled or with backrest). Green dot shows SVP & waste pipework taken directly out of the rear of WC.

    4. A pair of drop-down grab bars on both sides of the toilet

    5. A pair of wall-mounted grab bars on both sides of the toilet

    6. Height-adjustable washbasin with a pair of wall-mounted grab bars

    7. Privacy screen

    8. Hand paper towel dispenser

    9. Automatic, low noise dryer that incorporates a water collection system to prevent water dripping onto the floor 800mm – 1000mm from the floor.

    10. Soap dispenser

    11. Colostomy bag shelf (using the toilet cistern cover is not permitted)

    12. Full-length mirror (accessible and not obstructed by other equipment or positioned directly opposite WC)

    13. Wide paper roll dispenser (ideally directly above the end of the changing bench)

    14. Six coat/bag hooks (3 at two different heights, 1050mm and 1400mm)

    15. Two emergency alarm pull cords (one at the toilet and the other at the opening side of the doorway)

    16. Horizontal fixed grab rail at a height of 900mm on the rear of the door

    17. Alarm reset button

    18. General waste bin

    19. Sanitary waste bin

    20. Shower unit (optional) with long hose and floor drainage. (21. Shower hose length of 2000mm)

    22. Heater (location to be shown unless underfloor heating). If radiators provided, carefully position so as not to obstruct access to and use of any equipment. Maximum surface temperature of 43° Celsius.
